Animals in the airplane

If you want to travel by plane with your pet friend you must remember about few important things:

  • you must notify in advance that you want to travel with your pet while booking the ticket since the number of animals in the plane is limited!
  • your pet must be transported in a special cage (except for guide dogs). The cage must fit your pet's weight and size. When buying the cage make sure that it is spacious enough so that your animal would stand, lay and move inside comfortably. In order to minimize the stress caused by traveling, buy the cage before the trip so that your animal would become accustomed to it. Remember to – no matter how long is your trip - to make a bed inside the cage. You can also put a small toy inside the cage, which will surely make your animal feel better during the flight.
  • you are obliged to pay for the transport of your animal. The price depends on the weight of the animal plus the weight of the cage.
  • an animal is transported as a hand-luggage on the plane board (if its weight do not exceeds eight kilo) or in the airline hatch ( you are advised to enquire the information regarding all the acceptable cage sizes used for animal transportation in the airline hatch during ticket reservation).
  • do not forget to take your animal's valid vaccination document (rabies vaccination is required and it must be included) as well as medical certificate from the vet - this document must take into consideration the regulations of the departure country, the destination country and the countries where there is flight change.
  • when you travel to the UN countries or to Andorra, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland or Vatican you are obliged to take your animal's passport. The passport must be in accordance with the regulations of the UN. Do not forget that your animal must be implanted with a microchip (an electronic identification system) or it must be marked with a readable tattoo.
  • traveling to: Great Britain, Ireland, Sweden and Malta, apart form the documents and a microchip mentioned above, you must also have the certificate of the valid results of the antibodies level (the period in which these tests should be performed differs in particular countries mentioned above. You need to enquire this information before the trip, taking into account the regulations of the destination country). The treatment and vaccination information must be included in the animal's passport.
